Disputes, disagreements, and debates are common when working with others, but how do we navigate these situations? Students of the HAPI-YEP participated in the Art of Communication workshop where they explore various methods of communication and mediation. In a silent activity, students innovated in order to find alternative methods of communication, such as writing, body language, facial expressions, etc. Students were able to learn about and employ new and creative ways to communicate with one another. In the second half of the activity, students were exposed to several examples of communication and asked to define whether or not it was effective. They learned to identify practices that were effective and issues that were not effective. Lastly, students were given examples of communication in art, music, poetry, and pictures. Students effectively dissected each sample and discussed how effective or ineffective the employed methods of communication were. Throughout the workshop, students had the opportunity to expand and reaffirm their understanding of communication styles, paving the way for success in future endeavors.
