Sweet & Savory Treats

The HAPI-YEP after school program looks to cater to all aspects of healthy living and one way to do that is to educate its students on how to prepare healthy snack alternatives. We began our workshop with safety tips from one of our student assistants on how to safely prepare the food for cooking. Today, the students were shown how to prepare one savory wrap and one sweet wrap. The savory wrap consisted of delicious food items such as: garlic hummus, red bell peppers, turkey, and wheat tortilla. After all the items were arranged, the tortilla cooked over a grill to make the wrap nice and crispy. The very smell of the wrap would make anyone salivate, yummy!

The second wrap was a sweet wrap that screams “I am delicious and healthy!” These wraps consisted of bananas, strawberries, peanut butter, and wheat tortillas. Greek yogurt was offered to the students who are allergic to peanut butter.  After all the items are assembled on the tortilla, it is grilled and turns into a crepe-like dish. These delicious wraps are composed of simple everyday items which the students have access to if they were to go into the local grocery store. Not only were they able to get hands-on experience with cooking the wraps, they took down the ingredients and steps so they can make these snacks at home. Today was truly a great learning experience where together, we established a sense of community and team building.
