Celebrating Lunar New Year at HAPI-YEP

This week at HAPI-YEP, we celebrated Lunar New Year which is this Saturday, January 28th.

In honor of the New Year which will be the year of the Rooster, students wrote their wishes for the new year and added them to our Wishing Tree, stuffed and handed out red envelopes to their fellow classmates, ate oranges for good luck, played a Lunar New Year trivia game and enjoyed traditional new year games.

Exercising was incorporated into the traditional new year games the students played, which included Bo cua ca cop (a Vietnamese New Year game). In order for the students to participate in each round of the game, they had to do push-ups or squats. We played the game for over an hour!

From all of us at HAPI-YEP we wish you a Hapiy and Prosperous New Year!

Making their own snacks!

HAPI-YEP in collaboration with the Asian and Pacific Islander Obesity Prevention Alliance (APIOPA) presented a workshop to our youth that introduced the concept of Community Supported Agriculture and Dehydration.  Afterwards, our youth were able to dehydrate apples and pears in order to create their snacks for the following day.  Check out the before and after process below.  For more information on APIOPA, please check out their website at www.apiopa.org

10 minute Instant Recess: HAPIY Monkey

We encourage our youth to be physically active during the program.  We provide them with different fun physical activity games such as this one.  This game is called HAPIY Monkey.  It is a variation of monkey in the middle with some twists!

HIV Awareness

One of the assets we are developing this month is called restraint.  Restraint is defined as young person believes it is important to not be sexually active or to use alcohol or other drugs.

Because World AIDS days was held at December 1, we wanted to use this opportunity to educate our youth about HIV and how it affects the API community.  Check out the presentation we used for our youth below!
